7 Polite Ways to Get Your Udhaar Back Without Losing the Customer

7 Polite Ways to Get Your Udhaar Back Without Losing the Customer

Giving goods on udhaar (credit) is part of how Indian shops work. Regular customers expect it, and it keeps them loyal. But when lakhs of rupees sit unpaid, your own suppliers, rent and salaries suffer. Here are seven habits that help you collect on time, without awkward talks.

1. Write every entry the same day

Most fights about udhaar start with "I never took that". Write every sale and payment immediately, with the date and item. A clear record ends the argument before it starts.

2. Share a statement, not just a number

When you say "₹2,350 baaki hai", the customer may doubt it. When you show a statement with dates, items and payments, they can see it is correct. Send it as a PDF or a photo on WhatsApp.

3. Ask for a promise date

Instead of "jaldi de dena", ask: "Kis tareekh tak de paoge?" Write that date down. People keep a promise they made themselves far more often than one you push on them.

4. Remind on the promise day, politely

A short, respectful message works best: "Namaste ji, aaj ₹2,350 ka payment due hai. Shukriya." No anger, no long speech. If the reminder goes automatically, you never have to feel awkward about asking.

5. Thank them when they pay

A message like "₹4,000 mil gaya, baaki ₹2,350" shows you are honest and organised. It also reminds them gently of what is left.

6. Set a limit for each customer

Decide how much credit each customer can have, based on how they paid before. When someone crosses the limit, ask for part payment before the next big purchase.

7. Look at old dues every week

Udhaar older than 90 days is the hardest to recover. Check once a week who has dues older than 30, 60 and 90 days, and call those customers first.
